Quote for Today
It isn’t the presents under the tree that counts. It is the people around it. ~ Author Unknown
December 1st
This is it! Many of my friends have told me they can’t stand the clutter that decorating brings but I’ve always found it part of the fun. There are boxes and storage tubs all over the house and it will be an obstacle course for at least a week.
I found the recipe for my Christmas cards! The next thing will be to test it to make sure it is a good as it sounds. I usually invite friends or family in for a meal to check it out. Most times this results in a few changes to perfect the taste. Sometimes it is a total disaster and I have to go in search of an alternate. The experimenting will happen on Day 3 or 4. I’ll let you know what happens this year.
Day 1 – The Food Basket!
The Food basket is placed in the kitchen and each day it will be fed. When family and friends came to visit they, too, were expected to contribute. Young or old, it doesn’t matter. Each person was included.
Around December 20th, everything would be taken over to the church or directly to the food bank. These days even though the food basket goes out, we place money donations instead of food products. It makes the giving easier as it doesn’t matter where I find myself on the 20th because I can just pay online. How things change!
At our church, the first Sunday of every month is Food Bank Sunday which has always been a great reminder that we need to continue our support throughout the year.
Day 1 – The Doors
So the doors are the first thing to be decorated – every door in the house. These decorations are more than 40 years old now. I made the ribbon from strips of red broadcloth. The bows, a variety of colors, are filled with quilt batting and pillow stuffing and tied with either silk ribbon or jute rope. When I first did them, I had no idea they would last so long or that they would become one of our prettiest and best decorations. It looks so beautiful and brings back so many wonderful memories!
Here’s a new decoration I made for this year. I found an old poster board that served no purpose whatsoever and was about to pitch it in the fire pit. Instead it became a wall hanging.
How do you prepare for Christmas? What are your traditions? I would love to hear about them. Send me a note and I will share it in my next blog.
