Toasty Cheese Bake – another one of those fast and easy meals when you are at a loss for a menu item that everyone will like. I used this recipe in my Christmas card in 2008.
Toasty Cheese Bake (Christmas 2008)
Ingredients
1 lb ground beef
¼ cup chopped onion
½ tsp salt
1 tbsp. prepared mustard
2 tbsp. chopped celery
2 cups cheese (shredded)
8 slices toasted (white bread)
Sauce
1 cup milk
1 egg (slightly beaten)
½ tsp dry mustard
½ tsp salt & pepper
Directions
Cook and stir meat, onion, celery, prepared mustard and salt until meat is brown and onion tender. Drain off fat.
In a 9x9x2″ greased baking pan, spread a very thin layer of grated cheese. Arrange 4 slices of toast and over with 1/2 of the meat mixture. Add a layer of cheese enough to cover . Repeat with another layer of toast, meat mixture and cheese.
In a 2 cup measure, add the ingredients for the sauce and mix with a fork or whisk. Pour sauce as evenly as possible over the casserole. Sprinkle with paprika (optional)
Cover with foil and bake at 350⁰ for 25 to 30 minutes. (Be sure to preheat the oven)
TIP: Sometimes I substitute the toast for mashed potatoes making it into a type of Sheppard’s Pie.
